Soulfully Living's intention is to deliver inspiring ideas, articles and resources that positively impact the quality of your life. HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Hope you are preparing for a festive Halloween!! There were sure some great costumes in Los Gatos this past weekend. I always appreciate the "permission" to BE outrageously silly, scary, sexy or something different than their norm. Interesting how most of us wait for Halloween for "permission" to step out of the box. In most cases, this is probably a good idea. I can only imagine how we'd respond to a couple dressed in Dr. Suess characters outfits, or a man wearing a monster mask walking casually down the street. It sure would put on more smiles. And, maybe there are other ways we can give ourselves "permission" to try a different look between now and next Halloween.
This week's features...
Healthy Inside and Out: DAILY FLOSSING. There really is a difference between flossing EVERY day versus five days a week. Two inspirational stories that may turn you into a "daily flosser" too. It's gotten me -- and my husband -- pulling out the long-waxed string everyday...and enjoying the process.Soulful Spotlight: Back from Iraq: Celebrating Those Coming Back to the USA -- and Honoring Those Who Aren't. My older brother Bill is a Major in the Army, and is completing one year of service in Iraq. He flies home sometime in the next two weeks. My sister-in-law sent the note below, and a link, honoring the families of the 4th ID soldiers who won't be coming back. I was so touched, I felt compelled to include this piece. Please help me send blessings to these special people.Magic Moments: 67 Years of Bliss. The description of this "magical" couple symbolizes love on the deepest level. Love truly can endure, even as we shift and change and age. Get inspired by this true story. In appreciation and love, Life Coach Mary, CPCC, MCC

. . . . . .
Back from Iraq. It's been nearly a year since my brother, Major William C. Allen, III was deployed to serve in Iraq. He's been committed to the US Army for 20 years. Growing up, no surprise, his passion was model tanks, and we had lots of little green army men to play with in the garden. It always seemed like his natural path. This is the first time Bill has had to serve in a war. He'd always been on other assignments keeping him safe on the homeland. In conversation with him last year, prior to departure, I asked how he felt about "going to war." Mixed feelings. No one wants to go to war. No one wants to live in a dangerous environment. No one wants to leave their family for a year. No one wants to die. And yet, simultaneously, this is something he has trained for his entire career. While my communication with him has been limited, he was able to take "leave" to attend our wedding in May.
This is my brother, Major William C. Allen, III who flew all the way from Iraq to attend our wedding in May (Thank you, US Military). Bill is walking my dear friend Elizabeth down the aisle before the ceremony. (Elizabeth was responsible for introducing my husband, John and I.)

Major William C. Allen, III
He talked about how it really is in Iraq. Unquestionably, the media has distorted much. What I was most surprised (and encouraged) to hear, was how appreciative so many of the Iraqi's are for the USA "being there." Much like a nice kid who is constantly "beat-up" by the bullies of the school, the US Army is like that "big brother" keeping the "nice kids of Iraq" a little bit safer from the "terrorist bullies" who don't want to play by the rules. Progress is being made, although it isn't going to happen overnight. I'm looking forward to hearing more about his perspective at Thanksgiving time, since there has been a lot more turmoil in Iraq since May.From Laura, Bill's wife:
"It has been a long year but Bill is finally coming home from Iraq. They will be having flights back to Texas during the next two weeks. As happy as we all are here, I would ask that you take a moment and visit the website below. It is a tribute and list of the soldiers from Bill's division who have died this past year. For these families the homecoming wasn't happy and arrived too soon. I think it is easy to just see numbers sometimes instead of remembering that every single person on that list was someone's son/daughter/spouse/parent. So as you visit this site send up a prayer or a thought for these families. They will watch the happy homecomings these next two weeks with heavy hearts."
4th Infantry Division, Fallen Soldiers
It was an incredibly moving experience to visit this site, and I, too, feel it's incredibly important to send our blessings to those who are missing their loved ones. I honor each and every one of these soldiers for being courageous. This is real. I honor each and every one of their family members. May they each be strengthened by the memory of their loved one. May they each live their lives a little more fully.

Daily Flossing. We all hear it. Twice a year, our dentist and dental hygienists tell us to "floss daily." They tell us it will make a difference. If you're like me, and millions of other Americans, somehow we don't get sufficiently inspired enough to remember to pull out the waxy string each day. Does it really matter? I was on an Open Coaching Forum with my Success and Inner Peace Bootcamp. One of my participants wanted to get inspired to floss his teeth everyday. He knew it was good for him, but wasn't doing it. Fortunately, another Bootcamp participant shared her personal story. It had a profound impact on this participant (and me too), so I'm sharing it with you.
Rebel Meets Dentist
Linda Gabiel (www.lindagabriel.com) has always regularly visited the dentist, hearing the flossing lecture, again and again. She decided to up the ante and took on flossing five times a week. Pretty good, huh? When she returned to the dentist, although a "bit" better than before, she was still scolded. They touted, flossing EVERY day is significantly better than just five days a week. Could that really be true?In defiance, she decided to floss DAILY. The rebel in her was committed to prove the dentist wrong. She diligently flossed DAILY. There couldn't possibly be a difference in flossing EVERY day, over five days a week. Right? When she returned, she was mystified by everyone's response. The dental hygienist called all the others over to see her mouth!! They were in AWE!! There were NO bleeding points. The response she received turned her into a "believer." She hasn't missed a day in 20 years now.
2nd Story
One of my Los Gatos friends just experienced a similar phenomena. In January, this gentleman decided to take my 365 day challenge, and adopted "daily flossing" as a goal he would honor 365 days in 2006. Throughout the year, he's let me know he hasn't missed a single day (so far)! If that isn't inspiring enough, last week, he went in for an dental exam. He was shocked when everyone clamored around him to witness a set of teeth that have been flossed daily!!! Obviously, a rare occurrence in any dental office. He's now more inspired than ever to continue this practice. As Linda describes it, "Flossing gets the poo-poo out of your mouth each day." Food that doesn't make it into your tummy, settles in between your teeth and bacteria colonies begin to form. Apparently, you don't need to floss twice a day to get the results. And, it doesn't matter if you floss in the morning or evening. It simply matters that you floss ONCE each day. It's not so much that you're "cleaning" your mouth thoroughly. Each time you floss, you INTERRUPT the bacteria colonies. Interrupting the bacteria colonies, slows they're growth. It's the bacteria that weakens the gums and results in bleeding during those dentist visits.Want to prove this theory wrong? All it takes is daily flossing and a trip to the dentist. This is a challenge worth taking on. Allow your rebel to support you. I found this great site if you need some additional tips and inspiration to get into the habit of flossing.

There are also other health benefits to daily flossing. Of all the statistics correlated with long life spans and anti-aging, daily flossing in near the top of all lists. My biotech engineer husband explains, "Our mouths are the easiest way for bacteria/disease to enter out bodies." Gum health and heart health are related. Therefore, those who floss daily, clean the "poo-poo" out on a daily basis, and disrupt the bacteria that causes disease Makes sense to me. I'm a believer now. Are you? Small choices make a big difference. |

67 Years of Bliss...and still going. "This was a very special visit to the 'Queen City'. My father-in-law is ninety-three and is still caring for my mother-in-law, who is ninety-two. Both of them have macular degeneration, he's hard of hearing and she has advancing Alzheimer's (seems to know her husband most of the time, but not the rest of us). This amazing man speaks to his love of 67 years so gently, gives patient encouragement, and with what seems like a 6th sense, anticipates her every move and need. The night before we left, Harry and Marion were snuggled on their sofa singing (she hummed), teasing and laughing ... he truly shares "the moment" with her, wherever she might be. What a blessing to be witness to such sweet devotion. They truly are something to behold. Being there with my husband as he experiences this time with his parents was a privilege. I hope I never forget a moment of it." --- Karen, Ft. Collins, CO.
