It was a Saturday late evening and I was walking down the 5th Street Promenade in Santa Monica, CA with four friends...Michelle Cappell (now Humphrey), John Humphrey, John Lewis and Jerry (some of you know them). We were all laughing together, being somewhat silly and playful. We eventually found ourselves arm in arm with one another, all five of us chained together taking up the entire sidewalk, maneuvering between the crowd. We happened across a little band playing in the street with a small crowd leisurely taking in the music. John Humphrey, being the "Master of Fun, Entertainment and Spontaneity" decided we all needed to dance. We all hesitated for a moment. Then, slowly we were tugged into the open space..and off we went, the five of us dancing and skipping in a big circle hand in hand. Gradually, we plucked innocent onlookers into our dancing chain...and, the line grew and grew. We kicked up our heels, laughing with joy, smiling from ear to ear, expanding our circle of playful souls. The audience was filled with delight as they watched our spectacle. The song came to an end, everyone clapped and cheered. Then, as though we were cued..we calmly returned to the sidewalk and continued on our way..as though nothing had happened. Of course, we all smirked with joy and delight...pleased with magical moment we had created and experienced. I love having friends that are willing to let go, be spontaneous, silly and playful.
