My dear friend Jackie shares a glimpse of the evening of the Opening Ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics. We grew up together in Salt Lake City, where she lives now.

"We went to the opening ceremonies last night....WOW! It was the most amazing production I've ever seen. It really did "light the fire within!" It was cold but that was part of the fun. We took my whole family (including Anna), which made it even more special. I wish you could have seen it. The city was pretty socked in with an inversion complete with thick fog until yesterday. A strong wind came in and blew out the pollution and then mother nature did her thing and gave us a designer, early morning snow storm to blanket the city with an inch of beautiful snow...just enough to pretty things up! Just before the ceremonies started, you could see the beautiful, majestic wall of mountains behind the stadium and the gorgeous city lights. Then, as it grew darker, stars began to peak out from behind the clouds. Every now and then, it would lightly begin to snow. It was truly magical. It was a perfect evening. After we finally arrived back at our vehicle to go home, it began to snow quite hard which was so pretty. Again, another magical moment. It really made me proud to be an American, proud to be from Utah and...happy to be alive!"
