The Power of Acknowledgement - When was the last time you went in to a store, spent your hard earned money and really felt your business was appreciated?
When was the last time you did something special for someone and received a hand written Thank You note from them?Unfortunately, these experiences are rare. Over 97% of all businesses completely overlook one of the most powerful marketing principles - that is the power of acknowledgement.I believe it is pretty simple to succeed in business today. It starts with honoring your clients and showing your appreciation for them and their business. When your clients feel deep in their hearts that you care, respect and appreciate them, they will refer you so much business you can virtually stop all your marketing efforts. This may seem oversimplified and possibly unrealistic to you, but I have seen it happen so many times with my clients I know it to be true.Even a 14 year old has proven this principle to be true! My youngest son Tyler began caddying at a very exclusive and very expensive country club at the tender age of 14. When he started, he had only been on a golf course two times in his life - when I taught him how to caddy. He was competing against grown men with years of experience and many regular customers. He started off slowly, but each night when he came home he sent out a personal hand-written Thank You note to the member he caddied for that day. The response from the members was overwhelming. Many called me, or stopped me on the course to let me know what an impact that simple action had on their life. As you can imagine, this was the first time in their life they had ever received a Thank You note from a caddy. Tyler is now 16 and he has "regulars" of his own. He has members requesting him over more experienced caddies. Why? Because he continually demonstrates to the members that he is grateful for their business.In this computer age we live in, it is easy to send someone e-mail, or a computer generated letter. That is precisely why a hand written note is so powerful - it really separates you from the crowd.Here is an experiment that may dramatically increase your business. Purchase 10 Thank You notes and 10 stamps (never run a Thank You note through a postage meter). Your total cost is going to be less than $10.00. Then sit down and write a personal note to 10 of your best clients. Really let them know how much you appreciate them and their business. Speak from your heart!It may take a little while to see the results, but I promise you everyone will let you know in some way that they appreciated your caring. It may come in the form of more business, a referral sent your way, or love sent back to you.Develop a habit of sending out at least one hand written Thank You note every business day. If you do so, you will have touched over 250 people in the course of the year. You will have spent about a dollar on day. This is the cheapest form of marketing I know and the most effective. Imagine having 250 happy clients who are referring all their friends to you. Would you need any more business?Please don't let the simplicity of this idea fool you. It really does work!Here's another idea to try. Instead of sending out the traditional Christmas/Seasons Greetings cards at the end of the year and having them lost in the masses, try sending a Thanksgiving Card this year and really give thanks to all your clients for their business.I look forward to your feedback. | LISA'S MAGIC MOMENT - In 1994, I participated in a group visualization project. Everyone brought old magazines, and we cut out pictures and words to symbolize our dreams and goals and assembled them in a photo album, it was our "dream book." Every morning upon rising, and every evening before sleeping, you flip through your dream book and believe all of what you visualize will come true. I was a divorced mother, and ready to find my Mr. Right. On one of the pages in my book, I had a picture of a beautiful couple sitting at a table overlooking San Francisco bay. They were clearly in love, holding hands, staring into each other's eyes. On the same page, I put a picture of an engagement ring. I dreamed that some day I would be proposed to in San Francisco - I live in Dallas, but had been there once and loved it. On another page, I had a picture of a family of three riding horses in the mountains of Montana. I had never been to Montana, but thought it would be great to take my son there with my new husband some day. I faithfully reviewed my book daily.
Two years later, in 1996, I hit rock bottom. I was broken hearted because I'd allowed my 9 year-old son to live with his father, believing it was best for him. I was in an empty relationship. I had attempted to make a career change, and I had failed and been fired. There was not a dime in the bank, and I was still grieving the recent loss of my father. I was sinking into a deep, dark, suicidal depression. Alone, crying in my bed at night - I reached my breaking point. I prayed, I sobbed, to God, to The Universe - to whatever or whoever was out there: "Why should I go on living, I'm tired! I have no purpose, I miss my son, I have no love, no job, and no money. I see no reason for my miserable life to continue, I give up, I don't want to go on living! Tell me why I should go on living?!!"It was the moment of true surrender.I was emotionally and spiritually exhausted. As I laid there, softly crying, I became aware of a presence, a sense that I was not alone. Then I heard a powerful voice, which said, "I will give you what you need." I was not afraid. In fact, I felt a sense of profound loving energy within me, and all around me. Next, the voice said, "You must find a way to help someone." Then, I felt someone holding my hands and the voice said "I am always with you." A sense of peace permeated my soul and I knew that I would be given love, security, joy, peace, happiness, fulfillment, and purpose.In the days that followed, I listened to my inner voice as I was gently guided. Whatever my "instinct" told me to do, I did, knowing that I was being led to where I was most meant to be. Two weeks later, I met an angel named Lee and we began dating. One month later, Lee invited me to go to San Francisco with him for the weekend for the football game, the Cowboys vs. 49ers game. On Saturday night after dinner, we went out to dance. The club was in a high rise and had floor to ceiling windows, the view of the San Francisco Bay was incredible. I really didn't see it coming. We had only known each other for a month! We were there for the football game! I had no idea he would propose to me that night as he held my hand across the table overlooking the Bay.We've been married for over four years now, and my life has been a dream come true. In every way the promise was kept, and I was given what I needed. I decided that my dream book was magic, and since I had many other pictures in it that I wished to come true, I kept it a secret from Lee. So when Lee told me that, as a boy, he spent his summers in Montana and loved it, and he suggested we spend our first family vacation there - I just smiled and said, "that would be great." Yep, the three of us went horseback riding in the mountains of Montana, and it was beautiful.
